Since I moved here I've been fascinated by the history of the local area. The above website is my attempt to bring all the information together in one place, and try to seek out gaps in the information I've found and provide the missing information. It's in the very early stages at the moment, and I'm always appreciative of any snippets of information that anyone can give me.

The parish church was first built in 1261. In 1566 Castle Hall was rebuilt in stone, and later became an inn called the Beaumont Arms. In 1785 Joseph Ismay became vicar of St Mary until 1778. The church was rebuilt 1825 - 1826. The details I have found are unclear, but it appears it was rebuilt on the site of the original church, as there is an entry for the Beaumont Arms in a 1834 trade directory.
In 1871 the current church was built on the site of Castle Hall, with the older church being demolished in 1873, leaving the tower standing. I have found records that say that some of the stones were used to build St Pauls Girl's School (situated in front of St Pauls of Mirfield)

Iíve noticed that the 1825 rebuild only lasted for 50 years.

Castle Hall was demolished in 1865, so it appears this is the reason for the relocation, although there must be something else Ė I canít understand why a church would be moved 100 yards after 50 years unless there was another reason. The present church is slightly higher than the original, so maybe it was for the view, but again that seems not good enough, maybe the 1825 build wasn't up to standard or something. It's something I'll be trying to find out.

Until 1261 Mirfield had no parish church, just a chapelry. There is an interesting story of how Mirfield got its first Parish church. The wife of Sir John de Heton (Isabella I think her name was, I'll need to check) was robbed on her way to worship in Dewsbury; Sir John petitioned the pope and was granted a dispensation to build a church for the inhabitants of Mirfield.

Here is a map showing the present (blue) and ancient (red) sites

I've resized the image to be more readable, the original can be found in context here
