If your pepper grinder breaks don't panic; a wooden spoon and an ordinary saucer work just as well (if you don't have a pestle and mortar). Place a couple of peppercorns on the saucer and use the back of the spoon to crack them, gradually applying the pressure so they don't shoot out. Use the same technique to crush to the required size. I don't see any reason why a metal spoon can't be used, I personally find wooden better.

If you need to boil water in a kettle for washing etc, remember to put a couple of inches of cold water in the bowl first so it doesn't crack the porcelain.
