Personally I'd allow a minimum of 1500e in your reserve before breeding. You will need to pay for the following and still leave enough to care for your horses afterwards.
Stud fee - this starts at 200e
Vet fee - this can be up to 600e
Ultrasound - optional, 50e
If the EC your mare is boarded in doesn't have a vet, it's not a problem, it will simply cost you the maximum price (600e). If the EC does have a vet then the price will be 600e minus the percentage of the healthcare. For example, an EC with 97% healthcare will cost 503e for the vet.
Once the foal is 6months old you'll need to put him/her into an EC, this will be a minimum of 10e per day, whether you log on or not.
Remember, if you don't have enough money to pay for the vet when the foal is due you'll lose both the foal and a karma point. This has never happened to me, but I'm also assuming your mare will lose health/morale too.
If you find yourself in a situation where you don't have enough funds to call the vet, then simply do not visit your pregnant mare's page and she will not age (meaning the pregnancy will not progress). You can then earn your salary and more money from your other horses if you have them. Please note that if you only have the one horse and she is pregnant, this method will mean you will not be paid your salary if you don't look after her.
