Scratched CDsI found this information on Agent Forte a few weeks back. I've included it as it was on the site.

While I haven't encountered that exact error message before while trying to
read from a scratched disk (I usually get some "cyclic redundancy check
error" error message, I have had good luck recovering the data on the disk
by rubbing out the scratch with toothpaste. Yes, toothpaste!

several posts about such things and using toothpaste and furniture polish I
have able to at least copy the data from a disk to my computer and re-burn
another disk.
I don't know if the type or brand of toothapste makes a difference, but I
use tartar control Crest paste. Seriously. You rub in litle circles
radiating outward from the scratch and then rinse it off with water and
then isopropyl alcohol and then apply a light coat of furniture polish. I
used Pledge.
I'm speaking from my limited experience (three disks recently) but I
batting 100%... so far. Hope I haven't just jinxed myself or you.

I once used my cd software to burn an exact copy of a scratched
CD and the new disc didn't skip (it was a music cd). Polishing
can work too. I wouldn't try it on a hard disk though

Unfortunately the cd I tried the first advice on was damaged beyond repair (the opaque layer on the top side was damaged and the laser didn't have anything to bounce back from). I used ordinary cd cleaner in place of the isopropyl alcohol. I will be trying it on the next scratched cd I come across and updating with my results.
