Free kitten toys

Use your imagination and you never need to buy a kitten a toy again. Here are a few toys that my kittens absolutely loved, apart from the obvious ball of string etc.

Potato peel. Strange I know, I dropped a piece one day while peeling and Davi was sat next to me on the floor, he picked the peel up and was away with it. I tried it again next time we had potatoes and both the kittens spent ages arguing over this piece of peel.

Potatoes/fruit. Roll a small potato along the floor, or a small fruit. Some adventurous cats might chase an apple, but it's probably best to stick to smaller sized fruit such as plums. Just make sure it's not small enough to swallow, I wouldn't recommend grapes or nuts. Oh and cats don't like citrus fruits, so bear that in mind.

Plastic rings from plastic milk cartons. They're just something most of us throw away, but they can give days of fun to a kitten.

A dripping tap. Cats seem to be fascinated by this, if you have a slight drip on a tap why not utilise it and spend hours of fun watching your kitten try to catch it?

Door handles. Hang some string from a door handle and hey presto a ready made leaping toy. Just make sure you don't accidentally open the door on your cat. On the same technique ceiling fans can be used to good effect and great hilarity for onlookers.

Laser lights. Most of us have something like this hanging around somewhere, shine the beam on a wall and let your cat jump up and try to catch it. Torches also work, but a concentrated light gets their attention easier. As with all laser products, avoid shining it in your cats eyes.

I once made a simple toy using an empty clear plastic salad shaker (Heinz Salads are ideal) and some dry cat biscuits. Cuddles spent ages chasing it around trying to get the biscuits out (a hard knock will open the lid) which was good because he wasn't getting much exercise at the time. After a few days though he realised how to open it and exactly how to get the biscuits out once it was open so it only took about 2 minutes LOL

If you've got any elastic tie some to a stick to make a simple fishing pole. A toy at the end is optional. Cuddles used to take the end in his mouth and run to the other side of the room and try to tie it around a wooden chair leg. I'm not sure if this was actually what he was doing, but it certainly seemed that way.

If you have any more methods for entertaining cats please let us know.
