|

In the Gemini Thread I said that a fate worse than falling prey to organized religion is being ashamed of oneself. The proceeding is a new low, and it's not the first time some sanctimonious politician or agency stepped forward and expressed shame for occurrences from over a century ago.
New Jersey's tax dollars at work...
| Quote: | New Jersey officially apologizes for slavery
(CNN) -- New Jersey officially said Monday that it has "profound regret" for practicing slavery, and became the first state north of the Mason-Dixon line to pass such apologetic legislation.
The legislation does not need the signature of New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine to become official.
A committee of the New Jersey Assembly last Thursday approved the resolution, just one of several steps lawmakers had to take by Monday, the last day of the current legislative session.
The Assembly and the Senate voted overwhelmingly -- 29-2 -- to approve the resolution. The resolution states that "the fundamental values of Africans were shattered; they were brutalized, humiliated and dehumanized."
New Jersey, it reads, had 12,000 slaves, one of the largest populations in the northern colonies.
The state was also the last to emancipate slaves, in 1846, it says.
If the resolution had not passed, the process would have had to begin again.
The resolution did not need Gov. Jon Corzine's signature and will become official when filed with the secretary of state.
The symbolic atonement follows apologies for slavery made in 2007 by legislators in Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia.

162 years in the making, N.J. officials apologize for that in which their perceived persons played no role. There must be a story behind the story. Perhaps white on black violence rates are down in the state and Sharpton's strapped for cash?
Ah..yes! February is on it's way... Black History Month: a veritable gold mine of college lectures, $1,000 per plate political dinners, and a barrage of public reminders of how terrible white people were, hinting that we are still equally terrible today and must be ashamed of ourselves who aren't ourselves.
A year or so ago, a time when I still had TV, I caught the Morgan Freeman interview with reporter Mike Wallace. Freeman does not want a "Black History Month," and no one who subscribes to Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights platform would.
I'm not sure whether the 2 who voted against the measure could be considered conservative or liberal in this decision. On the one hand, they might be saying to themselves, "Why are we wasting the Assembly's time on this?" On the other hand, a "No" vote meant wasting time by starting again from scratch. How can that be considered a democratic vote if the assemblymen are forced to consider the measure until it passes? It was approved overwhelmingly because they ultimately had no choice but to approve it.
Other issues to be addressed by the New Jersey Assembly in the near future:
Apologies to:
inner-city African-American at-risk youths for neglecting to create legislation that might help them refrain from addressing each other, ironically, with the dreaded "N" word.
the NAACP and the United Negro College Fund for molding a society that does not do enough to foster the sound judgment of removing commonly offensive terms from one's own organization titles.
the disabled for insufficient wheelchair access, height concerns, dice visibility, and unreasonable duration of chip placement at Atlantic City's craps tables.
Native Americans for each and every time a white man sustained a high-pitched note and repeatedly slapped his hand against his lips.
Progeria sufferers for insufficiency of daycare staff and/or elementary school instructors in convalescent hospitals.
