I think evolution is a misinterpreted word. The Concise Oxford English Dictionary states it as the following: | Quote: | | evolution 1. the process by which different kinds of living organism are believed to have developed from earlier forms, especially by natural selection. 2. gradual development. 3. For the purposes of this topic I’m concentrating on the first two as these are what most of us have been taught in school ie natural selection & Darwin. I’m sure all of us remember being taught that evolution is a slow, mostly physical process that can take from a few generations to thousands of years to complete. As you can see, even the “official” terms are worded in a way which makes us automatically think of the physical rather than anything else.
A lot of people, myself included, have commented on how the new generations have totally different ideals to the previous ones. I’ve come to view this as an example of evolution. My belief is that we are continually evolving from day to day, mentally, emotionally, and also spiritually. Every time we learn something new it affects our previous knowledge base to a certain extent. As the world we live in changes, so must our perceptions and attitudes.
I know I’ve mentioned this book in another thread regarding a slightly different topic, but The Chrysalids (John Wyndham) is a great example of what could happen if a society decides that evolution is a bad thing and actively tries to avoid it. Here’s a quote which I find gives a good example: “The living form denies evolution at its peril; if it does not adapt, it will be broken. The idea of completed man is the supreme vanity: the finished image is a sacrilegious myth.”

Another thought regarding this is relationships. Many people seem to assume that the person they met years ago should still be the same person today, I feel that this is so wrong. Everyone changes over a period of time, and to expect otherwise shows selfishness. I feel that everyone should have the opportunity to grow and expand. The sign of a healthy relationship is when the people involved go through this process together and do not try to hold each other back.

| If you fully understand what Darwin realised in his insights in evolution, it should be obvious that cloning any life form is taking us up a blind alley. Cloning an identical copy whilst other species such as viruses and bacteria are evolving at speed is the equivalent of the mono-culture practised in modern farming techniques. Eventually the clone will require large amounts of drugs and antibiotics merely to protect it from rapidly evolving bacteria and viruses. |

Very good points Mark, I concentrated on the non-physical side of evolution in my posts as I don't really have a firm scientific background. Taking your post into mind, it makes me wonder why cloning is such a popular scientific pastime. It seems that nowadays cloning is the "holy grail" of scientists; so much money is spent funding these experiments and a big fuss is made when they're successful. Take Dolly the sheep for example, I'm sure everyone's aware of her "birth", yet how many of us remember that she lived a relatively short life?

Her death wasn't as highly publicised as her birth, and she was actually put to sleep due to progressive lung disease (something I myself didn't know until I googled it for the purposes of this thread - http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/antenna/dolly/131.asp ) There are also concerns that because the cell was taken from a 6 year old sheep, that Dolly's "true" age was actually a lot higher than originally thought.

What went well: the level of commitment and quality of discussion.
I am particularly interested in change mechanisms and how society goes about managing change as there are particular patterns. This was highlighted in the "denial...business as usual...mitigation...adaptation" cycle though what is different is the urgency that we have to get through this cycle in order to make the necessary transitions away from one set of market forces to what will eventually be another (though the word 'market' is likely to be redefined).
