Oh wow, there's just been a gas explosion down the road from me.
The first we knew of anything was a fire engine speeding down the road with lights on (no sirens) about an hour ago around 11am. We mentioned it was odd then thought nothing more of it. A couple of minutes later, two fire engines with lights and sirens followed it, so we immediately went to stand at the front door and look out (as you do). These were followed by a fire service transit van, two police cars, and an ambulance - all with lights and sirens. By this time the entire street was outside and we were trying to work out what was happening (as they were turning the corner at the end of the street and we couldn't see). A fire engine came along and parked at the end of the street, literally blocking off the street from the main road, it left a few minutes later when an ambulance service landrover came along. My neighbour got in his car and went to try and find something out, but he came back a couple of minutes later not having found out anything other than where the emergency services were congregated. Just then an unmarked fire service landrover slowly drove past us, and he stopped and said "do you know where the gas explosion is?" so we all silently pointed up the road and looked at each other when he'd gone and said "another one" (there was a serious one yesterday in Leeds - link)
After that things seemed to calm down, there were only two other vehicles went down there, an unmarked fire service estate car, and an ambulance land rover. By this time it was about 11:30 and I stood talking to my neighbour on the other side until about 12 when some vehicles started coming back. The ambulance came back with no lights or sirens, so I'm hoping that means no-one's been hurt. The fact that there was only one ambulance, and one ambulance land rover indicates to me if anyone was hurt there weren't many of them (or there'd have been more)
I've called family members to let them know if they hear anything on the news that we aren't affected and not to worry. If I find any news items regarding this I'll edit the links into my blog post (link below).
