This is a thread for free security software that you can download from reputable companies.

AVG Antivirus is a free Antivirus that is as good as a lot of the bought versions. Free updates so you're always protected. Please note that AVG Free Edition does not like running on a host computer on a network as it assumes that you are a business user

Zonealarm is a free firewall with very good protection. The bought version has a few extra features but the free version will protect your computer from attempts to access the ports just as adequately

Ad-Aware SE Free Edition is available from this site by clicking the link on the right. It is a good tool for removing Adware and I use it regularly on all my machines (note: the site asks you to download Flash if you don't have it but it works just as well if you say no to the download)

I have given this link to download Spysweeper (a very good Spyware remover) For the free version use the link that says "Free Trial". (they've changed this page since I last downloaded it, I'm pretty sure the free trial will last longer than 30 days tho - let me know if it doesn't and I'll update this) There are other utilities available on this site but I have only downloaded Spysweeper as yet, so cannot account for how the others run
