A lot of people refuse to have anything to do with AOL, but the fact is some of us like it and end up with very few advice resources other than the official one. I myself have been using AOL for almost 6 years now, and I am happy to try and help resolve any problems people may have.
Edit: I am actually leaving AOL soon, due to problems with BT getting their line enabled for AOL, but I will still offer advice regarding any AOL issues.

Ever had that annoying chat room virus that links to home videos? Know someone who has? This site details how to disable and remove it. Also a link to an AOL tech chat room for further help.
(note; try the above for homevideo.scr, homevideo2.scr and evolsux.scr also) _________________ It is those who are perfectly sane who are driven the maddest by an insane world...

After purchasing a laptop, I was given a 6 month free subscription to AOL. The following executable file included in version 9.1, possibly in earlier versions, too, was responsible for extreme slowness in everything that I did on my computer. I know this because it was only after killing it that I was granted relief from persistent 10 to 20 second delays in the middle of typing, opening/closing tabs, etc.
File name: AOLSoftware.exe
Location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\aol\1193989477\ee
I still have about 3 months remaining on my ZoneAlarm subscription, and their software is far from spectacular. More specifically, each time you upgrade to the latest version, the site settings are changed even though you specify during installation that you want the customizations to remain. I speak of full mobile code access and tracking cookies from sites such as Doubleclick, E-bay, Google, Netscape, MSN... the list goes on.
Despite the fact that I killed all access to AOLSoftware.exe in the firewall, I was interrupted with prompts telling me what I already knew to be true: that the file was malicious. These pop-ups could not be prevented by shutting off program alerts using the "SmartDefense Advisor" in ZA, and they placed themselves in the forefront while sending active windows into the background every 3 to 5 seconds.
The remedy was to navigate to the location above and rename the file, as opposed to deleting it, in case it was necessary after all. It's not, unless you insist upon using the AOL browser.
